SINGAPORE – With Halloween just a week away, diners at local ice cream chain Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee are finally ready to indulge.
No, it’s not fudge or chocolate. It’s dried mealworms and crickets from Insectumes, supplied by local company Insect Food, an importer and supplier of insect products approved for human consumption.
For a limited time, Creamier is offering insects as optional toppings ($1.50 each) paired with ice cream flavors ($4.90 to $6.50 per scoop).
Somehow I felt less scared when I learned that the insects were an ingredient, not part of the ice cream itself.
Sure, it might be easier to eat the ice cream if I couldn’t see the whole insect, but I’m not going to waste a precious scoop of ice cream if I don’t like it.
If you’re afraid of the “original” flavor of dried mealworms, there are less intimidating options like pre-seasoned cheese crickets or salted egg crickets.
Think of them as salty protein chips, get past the initial shock and let the crunch and flavor slowly sink in.
Insects pair best with nuttier ice creams, like the Halloween specialty charcoal black sesame ice cream and the signature roasted pistachio ice cream. For the purists, real chocolate ice cream is also an option.
As edible insects become more popular, I believe more people will view insects as a snack rather than a joke.
